When we started planning the very first Durham Adventure Festival, our aim was to build an event which celebrated everything about the great outdoors. We had aspirations for the festival to be fun and inspiring, where people could share their experiences and love for adventure.
The thing that pleased us most, was that while many visitors came to see the headline speakers, many also took a chance on speakers they had never heard of. Others came to pick up tips from the professionals about how to begin their first adventure, while some were just intrigued by the climbing wall outside the theatre, and came in to find out more. But everyone who came, left inspired and uplifted by what they saw.
It was this spirit of openness and adventurousness which drove our first festival. And from those small beginnings, the event has grown, and we are again welcoming some speakers who are leaders in their field, as well as some ordinary folk, who have done some extraordinary things.
So with the great outdoors as popular as ever (and even a climbing film – albeit, the extraordinary Free Solo – nominated for an Oscar), it feels like we’ve tapped into something special. So we hope we can once again inspire you to get outside, enjoy the outdoors and share the adventure.
